The composition came from drawings of the stairwells in The Barbican complex, London. The Barbican was conceived by it's architects (Peter Chamberlin, Geoffry Powell and Christoph Bon) as a “city above the city”. They designed the Estate with elevated pedestrian walkways, terraces, bridges and external stairwells to create an “urban labyrinth” feeling. It is not hard to get lost and disoriented within this labyrinth of corridors and stairwells. However, all the while you feel safe and protected from the outside world - be this physically in the City of London or from something else you wish to shelter from in your mind.
